Hardly do I consider these few lines a review of Edward Gibbon's Memoir. They are at best for me a benefit of sorts just to be associated with the great historian.I was drawn to the memoir because I had read, in years gone by, his master work, "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire." Thank goodness I have no request to review that history, which was quite useful to me at the time.
Readers are advised to downshift when they approach Mr. Gibbon, who wrote in a style most foreign to us these days. Reading today resembles traffic along the Interstate Highways of our nation. Speed, speed, speed, and more speed. The roads are filled with short sentences, choppy words, even symbols instead of words, all in an effort to get there, and get there fast. You'll not find that with Mr. Gibbon.
I say to potential readers of the memoir, slow down and enjoy the flow of his old English, the lengthy sentences that take you on a ride, unseen at any amusement park, and bring you to rest with a feeling of great accomplishment. At the very least, the read will provide exercise for the mind and eye and afterwards, you will appreciate the skip of modern day script.
Go to it, and follow it up with a read of "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire." Scholars, readers, people will enjoy that.

This is a well-produced text (unlike a $0.99 version also on offer) that looks good, and lacks all the artifacts of a bad scanning job.
These memoirs are a classic autobiography, which should interest anyone looking for the background of the historian of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.
This is good if you are a history buff.
stumbled on this memoir and found it quite good. My favorite line as a fellow writer is, " My own amusement is my motive, and will be my reward' when he talked of why he writes. bravo for this!
